Training Director

Dr. Marios Obwona is the Director of Training at the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). Dr. Obwona is a long-time member of the AERC network. He has participated in collaborative and thematic research projects and has also been a visiting lecturer at the AERC Collaborative Master’s Programme (CMAP) Joint Facility for Electives (JFE).

Dr. Obwona joined AERC in January 2008 from the Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC) in Kampala, Uganda, where he had been the Executive Director. He joined the EPRC – Uganda’s think-tank – as Senior Research Fellow in 1995, a position he held until 2002 when he was seconded to the Central Bank of Uganda as the Executive Director for the Research and Monetary Policy Department. He considers that the experience at the Bank left him with a wealth of practical skill that contributes significantly to his professional expertise. In 2005, he returned to EPRC as a Principal Research Fellow and became acting Executive Director in 2007.

Regional integration, fiscal decentralization, foreign direct investment, factor productivity, household savings and micro finance are some of Dr. Obwona’s main areas of research. He has published extensively in both local and international refereed journals and contributed a chapter to the volume emanating from the AERC Special Workshop on Foreign Direct Investment in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which was recently published by AERC.

He has also carried out a number of commissioned consultancy assignments for regional and international organizations in the areas of domestic resource mobilization, investments, public finance, and project evaluation, among others. In this capacity he has worked with the World Bank, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), African Development Bank, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Rockefeller Foundation, East African Community and African Capacity Building (ACBF).

Dr. Obwona holds a PhD in economics from the Australian National University, a Master of Science degree from the London School of Economics (LSE), United Kingdom, and Bachelor of Statistics from Makerere University, Uganda. He was for several years a lecturer in the Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics at Makerere University.
