Africa and East Asian Development Experiences

This project was about a comparative study of development experiences in Africa and East Asia.  Profs. Machiko Nissanke and Ernest Aryeetey were the project coordinators. This project brought together a number of senior African researchers in the network to discuss such varied themes as macroeconomic management and the development process, trade, industry and technology; financial policies and financial sector development; and rural development, income distribution and poverty.

The book (Comparative Development Experiences of Sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia: An Institutional Approach. Machiko Nissanke and Ernest Aryeetey (Eds). African Economic Research Consortium, Nairobi. 2003. Ashgate) that came out of these papers showed quite clearly that Africa had opted for a development path soon after its countries became independent that was very different from that chosen by East Asian countries.
