Institutional
Attachment Programmes
The AERC/IMF Visiting Scholars Programme
The AERC/IMF Visiting Scholars Programme, which
started in May 1994, has benefited more than 100 researchers.
The programme makes it possible for AERC researchers
to access the excellent facilities and staff of the
Fund, thereby facilitating the achievement of AERC's
mission of strengthening and helping retain local capacity
for research and policy analysis in sub Saharan African
countries.
Participation in the programme is based on an open
competition managed jointly by the AERC Secretariat
and the IMF. A representative from the IMF and the AERC
Secretariat meet during the May/June and December thematic
research workshops to select from the available applications.
Selection is based on the following criteria:
-
Judgement on which economists and projects would
benefit most from participation in the programme,
taking into account factors such as gender, geographic
and linguistic distribution; and
-
Availability of relevant expertise in the IMF Research
Department and the IMF's interest in the research
topic.
All active AERC researchers involved in thematic research
are eligible to compete in this programme and to submit
a short proposal (maximum three pages) that describes
the proposed AERC-supported research to be undertaken
during the attachment. Applicants must also submit their
curriculum vitae.
The World Bank Visiting Scholars Programme
Under this relatively new the programme, the World
Bank in collaboration with AERC, will select African
researchers working on proposals that are of interest
to its work. The terms and conditions of the arrangement
are generally similar to those of the IMF programme.
As in the IMF programme, also the application should
include an outline of 2-3 pages, describing what the
researcher would like to do at the World Bank as well
as a copy of his/her curriculum vitae. To be eligible,
the applicant should have either a pertinent research
proposal in the AERC preliminary review process or an
ongoing project.
The AERC/UNECA Attachment Programme
This programme started in 1998 and has offered senior
AERC researchers institutional attachment at the UNECA
for a period of one to three months. The participants
are selected by UNECA, with the expectation that they
will contribute to UNECA's work programme.
AERC Institutional Attachment Programme
AERC offers its own short-term institutional attachments
for African scholars to write up a body of research
results or to develop proposals for new research. Whilst
the duration of these awards can vary from one to six
months, the average is about three months. AERC frequently
shares the cost of the attachment with the host institution.
Selection of participants is done on a case-by-case
basis from the applications submitted, taking into account
the available budget; and gender, geographic and linguistic
diversification. Typically, 1-4 attachments have been
provided every financial year since 1992/93. Researchers
interested in participating should submit an application
to the AERC Director of Research, including evidence
that an institution has agreed to host them and a proposed
budget.
